INTERNATONAL DAY FOR EDUCATION: ABIA TEACHER URGES COLLEAGUES TO BE ROLE MODEL TO PUPILS/STUDENTS

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

Teachers have been encouraged to still serve as role models to their pupils and students to enable them to reach their hearts.

A teacher, Ms Gloria Peters, made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the 2024 International Day of Education with the theme: “Learning for Lasting Peace.”

Ms Peters explained that without being role models, teachers would not reach the heart of their students and pupils to encourage them to be peaceful at school, home and other places.

She noted that mentoring children especially from a tender age would help the young ones to develop desirable qualities that would enable them to be responsible and peaceful children and adults in the future.

For her part, another respondent, Mrs. Ifeanyi Nwankwo said that aside from parents, the next set of people the child learn from are teachers that they spend time with, and as such, have some influence on them.

Mrs. Nwankwo emphasized that by talking to their pupils and students about peace, the young ones could learn about the importance of working together and not allow such negative tendencies as segregation and hatred to take root in them.

The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 24 January as International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education for peace and development, and is dedicating this year’s event to the crucial role education and teachers play in countering hate speech.
