EBONYI GOVERNOR’S WIFE PLANS CAMPAIGN TO ERADICATE HUMAN PAPILLOMA VIRUS

Ebonyi State Government is to embark on a campaign for the eradication of Human Papilloma Virus, which causes Cervical Cancer among women.

The Wife of the State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, announced this during the grand finale of the launch of her pet project, BERWO in council areas held at the Headquarters of Izzi Local Government Area.

In the last two months, Mrs. Nwifuru has been moving from one Local government Area to the other with the message of better health for rural women, children and the internally displaced persons under her Pet Project BERWO.

Mrs. Nwifuru, who expressed worry about the menace of preventable diseases among rural population, noted that screening conducted of some women in the state showed that many were living with Human Papilloma Virus.

She explained that the state wide campaign would be carried out by her Pet Project in conjunction with the state Primary Health Care Development Agency while vaccination against the virus would be given to girls between nine and fourteen years.

Mrs. Nwifuru said her Pet Project had also embarked on the enrollment of men living with scrotal hernia for immediate surgical operation.

She noted that she would also launch screening exercise for hepatitis B and carry out free vaccinations.

The Deputy Governor of the State, Princess Patricia Obila, pointed out that the Pet Project of the wife of the Governor had brought succor to the down trodden and further deepened the benefits of the state’s People’s Charter of Needs in the area of health sector.

To checkmate cases of child trafficking and abuse, the Chairman of Izzi Local Government Area, Mr. Steve Nwankpa, said the Council in collaboration with Community Leaders had launched a database to monitor the wellbeing of any child taken away from Izzi Local Government Area to live with another family.

Highlight of the event was the inauguration of community development micro projects, including health centre, boreholes and VIP Toilets.
