The South East Governors have resolved to set up a joint security outfit code-named “Ebube Agu” to tackle the rising security challenges in the zone.

The Chairman South East Governors Forum (SEGF) and Governor of Ebonyi State, Chief Dave Umahi, made this known while addressing Journalists at the end of a one day security council meeting in Owerri.

He said the meeting, which was attended by the five Governors in the south east, Heads of Security agencies in the zone and leadership of Ohaneze, condemned the recent attacks at the custodial centre and the police facility in Owerri, as well as the killing of security personnel, natives, farmers and herdsmen in the zone.

Chief Umahi said the Governors were on the same page with the Federal Government in the fight against terrorism and banditry in the country, noting that heads of all security agencies in the zone would henceforth share intelligence in a manner that would help to checkmate the rising wave of crime in the zone.

Chief Umahi said the forum resolved to set up a committee made up of security personnel, government officials and relevant stakeholders to coordinate and to monitor the implementation of the south east joint security outfit.

The meeting also urged the Acting Inspector General of Police to stop further influx of IGP monitoring units to the zone but to allow Commissioners of Police and State and Zonal Commands to handle cases.

Governor Umahi explained that open grazing had been banned in the zone and urged security agencies to implement the ban and added that the meeting encouraged peaceful coexistence between farmers and herders to allow Governors to succeed in the fight against criminality.
