REPORTER: JOSHUA OBIALO

A Consultant Cardiologist in the department of Internal Medicine, Federal Medical Centre Umuahia, Dr. Chidozie Maduka, has advised people to avoid risky behaviours will affect their heart.

Dr. Maduka stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria correspondent Joshua Obialo in Umuahia, on the 2022 World Heart Day with the theme “Use Heart For Every Heart.”

He described the heart as the centre of all life processes in the body and lamented that cardiovascular diseases were responsible for over 17,000,000 deaths globally every year.

On the preventive measures of cardiovascular diseases, the medical expert urged people to shun smoking, alcohol intake, reduce salt to the barest minimum and remove a lot of spices that have sodium in diet.

He rather advised them to eat the traditional African foods, which were rich in fibre but low in calories, including vegetables, fruits, garri and yam.

Dr. Maduka also urged people, including those with a history of hypertension in their family, to engage in exercise for at least 30 minutes everyday and other healthy activities that would help them to have a healthy heart and spend less on buying drugs.
