RESIDENTS CRY OUT TO GOVT AS EROSION THREATENS ESTATE IN UMUAHIA

REPORTER: UZOMA NWANKWO

Residents of Umuobia Housing Estate in Olokoro, Umuahia South Local Government Area of Abia State have appealed to the state government to come to their aid following the erosion ravaging property in the area.

They made the appeal while conducting Journalists round the gullies caused by erosion in the area.

One of them, Mrs. Ndidi Nwosu, said if urgent intervention were not made by the government, the erosion would bring down most of the buildings in the estate.

Another resident, Professor Chris Chinaka, noted that over three buildings had already been pulled down by the gully, which he attributed to incessant flooding in the area caused by the poor condition of the roads that leads to the Housing Estate.

He called on the state government come to the assistance of residents of the estate to prevent further loss of property and threat to life by the erosion.

Contributing, Mr. Gilbert Nkenna, whose house had been severely damaged by the gully, stressed the need for government immediate intervention and rehabilitation, pointing out that he had been rendered homeless as a result of the gully.
