EBONYI RECORDS FIRST MONKEY POX CASE

Ebonyi State has recorded its first case of Monkey Pox thus becoming the 19th State where the virus has been detected in Nigeria.

Briefing journalists in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Health in the State, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike, explained that the case involved a 32 year old man, who recently visited River State but developed symptoms of Monkey Pox on his return to Abakaliki.

Dr. Umezuruike said the man, who was a native of Ugwulangwu in Ohaozara Local Government Area but resides in Abakaliki later tested positive to the virus and have been receiving treatment at an Isolation Centre located at Unity Square Abakaliki.

According to the Commissioner, 32 suspected cases are been monitored while seven contacts with the index case had been enlisted for tracing.

Dr. Umezuruike called on the people of the state to remain calm but apply safety precautions as transmissions could occur through human to human as well as animal to man.
