DAY OF CHARITY: BETTER THE ECONOMY TO REDUCE RIFE IN THE SOCIETY— EBONYI RESIDENTS TELL GOVT

REPORTER: CYNTHIA EGWU

As people in Ebonyi State join the rest of the world to mark International Day of Charity, some residents of the area have called on politicians and those in authority to properly channel the resources of the country to enhance the economic well-being of the citizens.

One of them and family counselor, Pastor Ekene Owezim, identified charitable acts to include expression of love and care to the people, material donations and financial assistance to the underprivileged to bring them out of difficult situations and counselling those in depression.

Pastor Owezim also appealed to government to reduce high taxation and create enabling environment for businesses to thrive, as well as create jobs for the youths to keep them out of crime.

He encouraged those in authority to make sure that the citizens were given what is meant for them.

Pastor Owezim urged people irrespective of their religion and tribe to be their brother’s keeper and imbibe the virtue of tolerance, as well as help one another for a better society.

Another respondent, Mr. Marcellenous Ikechukwu, called on the government and relevant authorities to ensure the safety of lives and property of people in the various communities, across the country.

Mr. Ikechukwu also appealed to people to shun greed and allow the International Day of Charity to make positive impact on their lives.

The International Day of Charity is part of United Nations 2030 agenda on sustainable development that recognises the barriers that poverty places on International development.

Since 2012, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly did set aside September 5 of every year to commemorate the International Day of Charity.

The day is used to mobilize people to help others in whatever way they can to improve and save lives, fight diseases, protect children as well as make make donations to enhance the well-being of the underprivileged in the society.

The day is also used to mark the anniversary of the death of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and to honour her tireless work of devoting her whole life to charity in helping people overcome poverty, suffering and distress.
