ABIA RESIDENTS DECRY RISING CASES OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

Nigerian women who face domestic violence have been urged to seek available help before it claims their lives.

This is the view of some women in Abia State while reacting to the alleged killing of one Mrs. Chidimma Gloria Ibeh, in Suleja, Niger State last week by her husband, Mr. Adeniji Jose, who has also died after reportedly consuming a poisonous substance.

This is in addition to the increasing media reports on domestic violence across the states of the federation.

One of the respondents, Mrs. Amarachi Chijioke, said many women remained in abusive homes with the hope that things would work out with their spouses.

She however said that if the abuse was intensifying, it was best to seek for help rather than stay and end up dead.

Another respondent, Mrs. Josephine Okezie, stressed the need for intending couples to be sure they could cope with each other’s character to avoid problems of jealousy, suspicion, infidelity, violence and untimely death after marriage.

Miss Charity Ekeoma in her contribution, lamented that domestic violence had become a global problem and was impacting negatively on the physical and mental well being of the victims.

She urged the victims to speak out as soon as they started experiencing abuse in their homes, take appropriate steps to save themselves and not be afraid to start all over.
