ENSURE THAT EMPLOYERS ADHERE TO LABOUR LAWS AS STIPULATED BY ILO AND WHO – NEMA OFFICIAL TELLS LABOUR LEADERS

A disaster Manager, Mr. Evans Ugo, wants an enforcement of the laws on safety and health as Nigeria joins the global community to mark “Safety and Health at work place.”

Mr. Ugo remarked that this had become necessary owing to increasing cases of occupational hazards and diseases at work environment being experienced by employees.

Mr. Ugo, who is the Head of Owerri Operational Office of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), asked labour leaders in various establishments to ensure that employers adhere to labour laws as stipulated by the International Labour Organization (ILO) and World Health Orgnaisation (WHO).

Mr. Ugo noted that more often than not workers in Nigeria were stressed up, injured, kidnapped, slumped, attacked or even killed in the course of duty.

He also mentioned other occupational hazards including cancer, respiratory, circulatory and communicable diseases contacted by workers as a result of exposure to hazardous chemicals.

The day is also to commemorate the dead and injured workers in the course of their day to day work environment.

The theme of the 2019 observation is “Safety and Health at Work.”
