PANDEMONIUM IN AWKA AS HOODLUMS CLASH WITH SECURITY OPERATIVES

REPORTER: UCHE NDEKE

There was pandemonium on Monday in Awka, the Anambra State capital following alleged attack by some hoodlums.

The situation caused panic as residents ran helter-skelter and parents hurriedly brought back their children and wards from schools.

Business activities also suffered temporary setback as most shops and markets were forced to close down for the day.

An eye witness told Radio Nigeria that the incident was as a result of an incident that occurred at Eke Awka Market between security operatives and some hoodlums.

Meanwhile the police Command in Anambra State said it arrested one suspect at the Eke Awka Market who allegedly attacked police convoy on patrol.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, said the patrol was part of the strategies the Command adopted to reclaim the public space and boost confidence among the residents.

He noted that the situation was being monitored while the patrol operations continued.

Our correspondent observed that the incident occurred barely three days after the new Commissioner of Police, Mr. Echeng Echeng, assumed duty in the state.
