MAIDEN EDITION OF GOV OTTI SEC SCH UNITY GAMES KICK OFF IN UMUAHIA

One thousand, eight hundred and forty students from various secondary schools in the 17 local governments of Abia state are participating in the week-long maiden edition of Governor Otti’s Secondary Schools Unity Games in Umuahia.

Declaring open the event, Governor Alex Otti said machineries had been set in motion to revive inter – house sports and other sports competitions to harness the potential of Abia youths.

The Governor directed Principals of secondary schools to regularize inter-house sports in the secondary schools.

He stressed that the State Ministry of Youths and Sports was working with its Ministry of Education to restore Physical and Health Education in the State school system.

According to Governor Otti, negotiations are on with both foreign and local sports investors to develop sports.

He called on public and spirited individuals and development partners to synergize with the state to further harness potential in sports.

Governor Otti urged the students, who are involved in the competition, to approach the games with the goal to win and tasked the officials of the competition to be fair.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Nwaobilor Analaba, explained that the essence of Governor’s approval of sports competitions among students was to improve sporting activities among school children, especially at the grassroots.

For his part, the State Director of Sports, Abia State Sports Council, Mr. Obioma George, explained that the event was first in history of the state and applauded Governor Otti for his interest in sports.
