FEAR OF THE UNKNOWN GROUNDS SOCIAL & BUSINESS ACTIVITIES GROUNDED IN AWKA

Reporter : UCHE NDEKE

Some offices and shops were under lock in Awka,  Anambra State capital on Monday, despite the suspension of the sit at home order issued by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

The news of the suspension was in the media since Saturday but  residents, out of fear of the unknown, decided to stay at home. Some commercial banks, filling stations and markets were closed to business while transportation was skeletal within the state capital.

Few individuals, however, were seen on the roads as major Junctions, including Aroma, Kwata, Amawbia and popular Unizik temporary site Awka remained scanty and less busy. In an interview, a resident, Mr. Paul Okolo, said the voluntary compliance by the people may be out of fear of their experience the previous Monday when some people were allegedly attacked by youths believed to be IPOB members.

Another resident, who gave his name as Mr. Kevin, however said the Monday sit at home was a welcome development as it afforded him the opportunity to rest. However, Radio Nigeria observed that transporters and commuters started coming out gradually as at the day proceeded.
