FIX REALISTIC MINIMUM WAGE — ABIA WORKERS CRY OUT TO GOVT

REPORTER: JOHN MADUAGWU

The federal and state governments as well as the organized labour have been urged to come up with a new minimum wage one that will give Nigerian workers a new lease of life.

Some civil servants in Abia State made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria in Umuahia on this year’s Workers Day.

One of them, Mr. Chukwuka Reuben, said the new minimum wage was needed as workers were now experiencing extreme difficulty due to the high cost of living.

He also called on the authorities to put in place an effective control mechanism to guard traders against fixing cut-throat-prices, using irrelevant excuses.

For Miss Mercy Amechi, there was need for state governments to work towards restoring the lost glory of the civil service, which would result in greater productivity.

Other respondents made a strong case for regular training of workers and provision of relevant working tools to enable them to discharge their responsibilities in line with modern trends.
