ABIA ASSEMBLY PASSES BILL TO REPEAL PENSION FOR GOVERNORS & DEPUTY GOVERNORS

The Abia State House of Assembly has passed a bill to repeal the Abia State Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s Pensions Law No: 4 of 2021.

The Bill entitled “HAB 11, The Abia State Governor’s and Deputy Governor’s Pensions Law Repeal Bill 2024” was sponsored by the Majority Leader and member for Arochukwu State Constituency, Mr. Okoro Uchenna Kalu.

Leading the debate on the floor of the House during plenary, Mr. Uchenna Kalu described the bill as timely as it would help to reduce the cost of governance, free funds that would be deployed in the area of development of the state and welfare of greater majority of the people.

Announcing the passage of the bill, the Speaker, Chief Emmanuel Emeruwa, commended his colleagues for their understanding and cooperation.

He added that it was in line with the yearnings of the majority of people of Abia State.

If accented by Governor Alex Otti, it means that past governors in the state will no longer be paid pension and associated benefits.

The House also passed for second reading “Faith Based and Private Colleges of Nursing Sciences Establishment Bill 2024” sponsored by the member representing Umuahia South, Mr. Emeka Obioma.

The Assembly committed the bill to its Committee on Health to conduct public hearing and report back to the House.
