WORLD TOILET DAY: ENUGU RESIDENTS AND HEALTH OFFICERS ADVOCATE IMPROVEMENT IN PUBLIC WATER SUPPLY

As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate world toilet day, health officers and concerned citizens have called on the need to keep toilets clean emphasized.

Speaking on the relevance of the day, the Secretary Health Officers Association of Nigeria Enugu State Branch, Mr. Isaiah Abonyi emphasizes that access to toilet is key to a healthy living.

Mr. Abonyi advises the general public to make cleanliness of their toilets a priority to avoid certain diseases.

A cross section of people in Enugu metropolis interviewed by Radio Nigeria on the importance of having toilets in the environment urge government, especially local government to ensure that every building has functional and modern toilet facility.

Some of them also call for improvement in public water supply as it is very critical to maintenance of sanitation and hygiene in private and public toilets.

According to the respondents, access to functional toilets are important because they have a positive impact on public health, human dignity and personal safety, especially for women.

The World Toilet Day, which is an official United Nations International Observance established by the world toilet organization in 2001, is aimed at ensuring that everyone has a safe toilet by 2030 and to inspire action to tackle global sanitation crisis.

World Toilet Day is celebrated every November 19 and the theme of the 2018 celebration is “When Nature Calls.”
