FRSC CHAMPIONS THE USE OF BICYCLES TO CURB ROAD CRASHES

Efficient transportation remains a critical factor to the economic and social prosperity of any nation.

The was the view of the Sector Commander ,Federal Road Safety Corps in Anambra State Mr. Sunday Ajayi while briefing newsmen on the celebration of the National Bicycle Week 2016 Edition in Awka.

According to him, a well planned bicycle transportation system will have positive impact on national vehicle usage and by implication reduces national fuel consumption.

Mr. Ajajyi while speaking on the advantages of using bicycle as a means of transportation in the country,  pointed out that research by FRSC  indicated that a reduction in number of urban vehicle usage would lead to a reduction in deaths, injuries and other damages on the roads.

“The advantages realizable from this cannot be over emphasized. We are talking of congestion on the highway because of the increase motorization on our roads. We are talking of the climate, the fume emission from the vehicles, how it affects the ozone layer. We are talking of the cost effect. We are of exercising by riding on a bicycle make us live a healthy life. When you look at all these things and more importantly the reduction in crashes: it is important to us.”

The Sector Commander explained that virtually all the twenty nations presently in the global safest roads ranking had successful planned bicycle transportation.

While calling on Nigerians to key into the idea, Mr Ajayi emphasized that there was an on-going global drive to drift from motorized mode of transportation to non-motorized means of movement especially in urban centers.

In a remark, Anambra State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr Uju Nwogu, represented by the Director of Sports in the Ministry Mr. Joseph Umudu encouraged the people of the state to key into the idea, as it would assist them greatly in many aspects of life.

The theme of the event was ”Reduce Congestion, Cycle Instead.”
