NULGE PRESIDENT DEMANDS ESTABLISHMENT OF CNG STATIONS ACROSS NIGERIA

REPORTER: CHRISTIAN OBILERI

The National President of Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE), Comrade Akin Ambari, has called on the Federal Government to establish Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) stations across the country as a way of reducing the sufferings of the people.

Addressing workers in Awka, the Anambra State capital, Comrade Ambari said every Nigerian needed a cheaper source of fuel as not everyone could enter commercial vehicles at all times, saying that private individuals couls benefit from it when established.

He observed that the removal of oil subsidy by the Bola Tinubu administration had inflicted great pains and hardship on the masses with increase in crime, especially kidnapping and terrorism.

The labour leader canvassed for local government autonomy in the country, arguing that it would solve half of the problems facing the people.

Comrade Ambari noted that Care-taker Committee arrangement at the local government system was an aberration, insisting that local government finance should be accessed by democratically elected local government chairmen.

He, however, commended the National Assembly for planning to withdraw funding of local government areas in the country not run by democratically elected chairmen.

The Chairman House Committee on Labour Matters in the Anambra State House of Assembly, Mr. Kingsley Udemezue also called for democratisation of the local government system in the country.

Mr. Udemezue stressed that local government is about grassroots development, noting that, when properly administered, it would solve a lot of problems in the rural areas as people would be fully engaged with sundry activities.

In an election conducted during the event, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe emerged victorious as the President of the union in Anambra State with a total vote of 185.

Also elected were Comrade Nnamdi Nweke who won unopposed as the Publicity Secretary while Comrade Uche Nwora got elected as the State Welfare Officer, among other elected officers.

In an acceptance speech, Comrade Chikwelu Adigwe thanked the workers for the confidence reposed in him and pledged not to disappoint them.
