WOWICAN STEPS UP CAMPAIGN AGAINST GENDER BASED VIOLENCE

Mothers are encouraged to inculcate in their children, especially girls, moral and values that will advance humanity. The Chairperson, Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN), Prophetess Ann Oforji gave the advice in Enugu during a workshop with the theme, “Ending Violence Against Women and Girls.”

Prophetess Oforji explained that the workshop, which was organized by WOWICAN in collaboration with Nasurulatti Faith Society (NASFAT) and the Federation of Muslim Women of Nigeria (FOMWAN), was aimed at checking incidences of gender based violence. She urged government and other stakeholders in gender based issues to be committed to the safety of women and children.

Speaking on the dangers of violence against women and children, the secretary, Women Affairs, NASFAT, Enugu, Mrs. Mariam Sulaiman, explained that apart from the physical injuries and even deaths, the psychological trauma weighs on these victims. In a message on the occassion, the Women Leader, FOMWAN, Enugu State Chapter, Hajia Alimat Musa Ani, urged women in the country to be mindful of the dressing of their young girls.

One of the participants, Mrs. Bello Fatima pledged, to put to use the knowleged she garnered from workshop to use. Highpoint of the workshop was the empowerment of women who had undergone training in vocational skills with grants to start their businesses.
