Enugu State Police Command has arrested one Nnenna Egwuagu for allegedly administering a poisonous substance, to her three year old stepson, Wisdom Egwuagu, thereby causing his sudden death.

Her arrest followed a report by her husband and father of the deceased child, Mr. Justine Egwuagu, after observing unusual actions of the suspect towards the child.

A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Mr. Daniel Ndukwe Ekea, noted that the 29 year old woman, a native of Umulumgbe in Udi Local Government Area of Enugu State, confessed to have committed the alleged crime on April 9, 2021.

According to the statement, “preliminary investigation shows that the suspect confessed to having administered the noxious substance, suspected to be that of sniper insecticide, to the child.”

The statement pointed out that the suspect claimed her action was not to kill the boy but to punish her husband for neglecting her and her baby girl.

“She claimed that her action was due to her husband’s inability to take care of her and their daughter; and that she wanted the child to become sick so her husband could spend money to treat him,” she stated.

The child was confirmed dead in the hospital and his corpse deposited in the mortuary for autopsy.

Meanwhile, the statement indicated that the container of the deadly substance and syringe she used in administering the substance to the child had been recovered.

It states that further thorough investigation into the case was ongoing at the State CID, Enugu.
