WE SHALL EMPLOY SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETERS— ANAMBRA COMMISSIONER ASSURES DEAF WOMEN

REPORTER: PAMELA IGWE

Anambra State Government says it will run an inclusive government where everyone is treated equally, especially the vulnerable.

The Commissioner for Women and Children’s Affairs, Mrs. Ify Obinabo, gave the assurance when members of the Deaf Women Initiative visited her office.

Mrs. Obinabo said she felt the pain, which deaf women went through while assessing health care and other essential services.

She promised to help to ensure that sign language interpreters were employed whenever recruitment commenced.

The Commissioner also pledged to join forces in advocating against all forms of violence and discrimination against women and girls in Anambra State.

Earlier, the Executive Director of Deaf Women Initiative, Mrs. Helen Alase, explained that deaf women and girls in the society were faced with sensitive issues, which included sexual abuse, gender based violence, stigmatisation, discrimination and sexual reproductive health right.

Mrs. Alase advocated the employment of sign language interpreters in the civil service to promote inclusion, accessibility and improved communication for deaf women and girls.
