REPORTER: CHINAZO ILECHUKWU

Women from across the three senatorial districts of Imo state have staged a peaceful protest at the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri demanding the release of certified true copies of documents used in the November 11 governorship election in the state to opposition political parties for inspection.

The women, who came in their numbers, carried placards with various inscriptions urging the INEC to do the needful without further delay.

Speaking with journalists, one of the women, Mrs. Akudo Nachukwu, called on the INEC Resident Electoral  Commissioner in the state, Prof Sylvia Agu, to make available results from the IREV portal.

Another spokesperson for the women, Mrs. Dorathy Ogazi called on the commission to give peace a chance adding that the action of the Commission was capable of causing tension and worsening insecurity in the state.

Meanwhile, the Head Voter Education and Publicity INEC Imo State, Mrs. Emmanuella Opara, dismissed the claims that the commission was denying any party access to the documents.

She explained that any party that met the requirement of making the necessary payment for the documents would be obliged as the law stipulated.

Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the election, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, had alleged that INEC was frustrating the effort of his lawyers by denying him access to results sheets and other materials used in the election.
