The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has issued strict warnings against underage driving in the country.
The Sector Commander FRSC Anambra State, Mr. Adeoye Irelewuyi, gave the warning in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Awka. Mr. Irelewuyi explained that FRSC embarked on a sensitization campaign to enlighten motorists and students on safety of lives and safe road-use.
He said that the command had observed that some children below the approved driving age now ride motorcycles, tricycles and even trucks, emphasising that it was a serious offence. The Sector Commander stated that enforcement had been tightened in that regard, hence, the sensitisation to let residents know that such was an offence.
According to him, the corps has prioritised enlightenment so that whenever anyone is booked, they will not say they are unaware of their offence, pointing out that the accepted age for driving remains 18.
He said that driving by under-age persons were very dangerous not only for themselves but for other road users. The FRSC boss however, appealed for more collaborations with the general public to ensure the nation’s roads did not become death traps for motorists.
