FRSC CANVASSES NEW NATIONAL ROAD DESIGN TO ACCOMMODATE BICYCLE RIDERS
The Federal Road Safety Commission, FRSC has called on the government to come up with a new national road design to accommodate bicycles as a means of transportation on all categories of roads.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Ebonyi State, Mrs. Stella Uchegbu, made the call during sensitization of cyclists to mark this year’s International Cycling Day.
The sector Commander also led some cyclists on a road show to commemorate the day.
This is the second time an agency of the government is calling for the reintroduction of bicycle as an affordable and efficient means of transportation.
The first to push for the return of bicycle on Nigerian roads was a one-time Minister of Transportation, Chief Ojo Maduekwe, who not only saw it as a veritable means of transportation but also rode bicycle to office on a couple of occasions.
The Sector Commander of FRSC in Ebonyi State, Mrs. Stella Uchegbu, attributed dwindling interest in cycling to the design of Nigerian roads, pointing out that reintroduction of bicycle would help in the reduction of carbon monoxide emission from automobiles.
A cyclist, Mr. Bonaventure Ume, pointed out that bicycles had been remodeled with efficient technology to address some shortcomings inherent in the old model and enjoined Nigerians to re-embrace it as not only a means of transportation but also for exercise.
Another cyclist, Mr. Ugochukwu Anioke, commended the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) for recognizing the importance of bicycle in decongesting Nigerian roads and called on the agency to provide them with bicycle safety kits.
About 30 cyclists participated in the road show, which took place at a section of Enugu Abakaliki Highway.
