FOOD SHORTAGE: NEPAD CANVASSES EFFECTIVE STRATEGIES WITH IMO GOVT, FARMERS

Stakeholders in agriculture have been urged to effectively collaborate in ensuring restoration and increased food production in the country.

The National Coordinator New Partnership For Africa’s Development (NEPAD), Princess Gloria Akobundu, stated this in a message to a workshop on “improved food systems, build sustainable water management and effective strategies for ecosystem restoration.”

Princess Akobundu, who was represented by Dr. Clara Njoku, stressed that the devastating impact of variables on food systems, nutrition and water management had lowered productivity, healthy leaving and economic development.

The Commissioner for Livestock Development in Imo State, Dr. Anthony Mgbeahurike, said that “Africa is bathling with food security” as a result of natural disasters like floods, climate change and man made causes including corruption and insecurity.

Dr. Mgbeahurike called for concerted efforts in livestock businesses and crop production to address food insufficiency in the country.

The Chairman Farmers Association in the state, Dr. Vitus Enwere, promised to coordinate other farmers to increase sustainable food systems and nutrition for economic growth and development.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the programme was aimed at supporting small scale farmers and relevant stakeholders in line with SDGs 2 on zero hunger.
