REPORTER: CHUKWUKA AGUKWE

Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma, has challenged media professionals in the country to stand firm and distance themselves from ethnic and religious interest that can cause divisive tendencies.

Governor Uzodimma stated this at the 18th All Nigeria Editors Conference held in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

He called on members of the guild to have an in-house cleansing to save the profesion from quacks.

He noted that the quality of journalism practice was reducing drastically.

According to Governor Uzodinma, some journalists have been taken captive by emotional, tribal and religious clevelages.

Earlier in a welcome address, the President Nigeria Guild of Editors, Mr. Mustapha Isah, explained that the conference would examine all aspects of the 2023 elections, including the activities of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the security during and after the polls as well as election observers.

Mr. Isah pointed out that it is the duty of the editors to expose anti democratic elements planning to ensure that people’s will did not prevail.

In his good will message, the Executive Vice Chairman, Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), re-presented by the Director Cooperate Affairs, Mr. Reuben Moka, said the media must take a position to ensure that the reportage of the election would be fairness, balanced and engaged in professional manners at throwing questions to the people.

The theme of the conference is “political landscape, credible elections and the role of editors.”
