COURT AWARDS ONE BILLION NAIRA COMPENSATION TO MAZI NNAMDI KANU

REPORTER: LAWRENCE NWOKEDI

A high court sitting in Umuahia, Abia State has ordered the Federal Government to pay one billion naira as compensation to the leader of the proscribed Indigenous people of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, for inversion into his house on September 2017 by the Nigerian Army.

Delivering judgment Justice Benson Anya said that the inversion of the Army into Mazi Nnamdi Kanu’s residence at Afaraukwu in Ibeku Umuahia North Local Government Area was a violation of his fundamental human rights.

The Judge also directed that an apology letter be written to Mazi Kanu by the Federal Government as a result of the attack by the military.

Speaking shortly after the judgment, the lead counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, Mr. Aloy Ejimakor, described the judgment as justice for the people.

Also, one of the counsels to the respondents, Mr. Amos Tori, said that they would study the judgment in order to know the next action to take.
