ANAMBRA STATE GOVT TO EMBARK ON ANOTHER ROUND OF TREE PLANTING — COMMISSIONER

Anambra State Government says it will launch its tree planting next week to mark this year’s World Environment Day in the area.

The Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Felix Odumegwu, made this known while interacting with Radio Nigeria in Awka.

Dr. Odumegwu said over two million Malaysian hybrid coconut and oil palm seedlings would be distributed to the 21 local government areas while key locations would see the planting of two trees per house.

According to the Commissioner, the one house, two trees campaign mandates that every land developer dedicates 35% of their land to green areas, including gardens and tree cover.

The Commissioner hinted that the Federal Government had already planted 3,000 oil palms in over five hectares of erosion prone sites in Nibo Awka.

He explained that Anambra State Government has environmental challenges, particularly erosion with almost all its 179 communities affected.

The theme for the 2024 World Environment Day, entitled: “Land Restoration, Desertification and Drought Resilience” with the Slogan “Our land, Our future.”
