REPORTER: PEACE AGBO
The wife of the Abia State Governor, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, has pledged to ensure drilling of two water boreholes and reticulation of water to the people of Ajatakiri in Ajata na Igu Autonomous Community in Ikwuano Local Government Area of the state.
This is to cushion the effects of acute water scarcity occasioned by the contamination of the only source of drinking water in the community by yet to be identified persons.
Mrs. Otti announced this while handing over some relief materials to the people of the area.
She said the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in collaboration with the Chairman of Ikwuano LGA would embark on the project to salvage the situation pending the conclusion of investigations into the matter.
While advising the villagers to stay away from the contaminated river, Mrs. Otti assured them of relaying all the challenges of the community, including road construction for easy movement of agro products to the Governor.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Environment, Chief Phelimon Ogbonna, said the report of the contamination of the river pushed the Ministry to swing into action.
Earlier, an Elder statesman man in the community, Chief Harbour Okeosisi decried the untold hardship the community had suffered since the contamination of the river and thanked Abia State Government for its quick response to salvage the situation.
