TEACHERS DAY: ABIA TEACHERS REEL OUT DEMANDS

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State says his administration will continue to place priority on the welfare of teachers in the state.

Governor Otti gave the assurance in a message to mark this year’s World Teachers’ Day in Umuahia.

The Governor represented by a Director in the Ministry of Education, Mrs. Judith Nwankwo, noted that government was embarking on the training and retraining of teachers in primary and post primary schools to enable them acquire the basic teaching skills.

He assured them that government would look into their demands, stating that under his administration, teachers in the state employ would have a course to be happy.

Earlier, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) Abia State Wing, Comrade Friday Madu, while commending the Governor for the immediate commencement of salary payment to teachers and rehabilitation of some delapidated structures in some schools in the state, appealed to him to address some of their problems.

They included non payment of teachers salary structure (TSS), O?outstanding arrears of teachers salaries, inadequate teachers in both primary and secondary schools in the state and delay in remittance of union check off dues of members in the state

The event featured a march past by NUT members from all the 17 local government areas of the state.

The theme of the day is “The.Teacher we need for the Education we want : The global imperative to reverse teacher shortage.”
