30 RESCUED FROM CAPSIZED BOAT IN ANAMBRA — SEMA

The Anambra State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) has confirmed that about 40 persons were on board the boat that capsized in Ogbaru Local Government Area.

The Executive Secretary of the agency, Chief Paul Odenigbo, made this known while interacting with Radio Nigeria on update about the unfortunate incident that happened on October 7, 2022.

According to Chief Odenigbo, the boat after loading at the shores, had engine problem and in an attempt to restart it, water current carried the boat and hit at a bridge, causing it to capsize.

The SEMA boss said the Transition Chairman of Ogbaru Local Government while briefing the state Committee on Flood, said 30 persons were rescued immediately while 10 dead bodies were recovered during search and rescue mission.

Chief Odenigbo noted that the Anambra State Government had after the incident directed that anyone entering boat in the area must wear live jacket for safety.

The SEMA boss said following the directive, the agency had supplied enough live jackets to the four mainly affected Local Government Areas, which are Ogbaru, Ayamelum, Anambra East and Anambra West.
