REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stressed the need for more sensitization of Nigerians, especially those residing in rural areas, to the imperatives of environmental cleanliness.

The Director General of the Scheme, Major General Shuaibu Ibrahim made the call in a message to an Environmental Sanitation organised for corps members serving in Ebonyi State.

Represented by the Coordinator of the Scheme in the State, Mrs. Mercy Bamai, the Director General explained that the exercise, which commenced in 2021, was aimed at reducing health risk factors promoting poor hygiene with particular focus on preventing water and food contamination.

Speaking on the theme of the exercise, which was “clean environment, good hygiene, panacea for good health and long life,” Major General Ibrahim observed that prevention of outbreaks of diseases would only achieve the desired result if there was proper community mobilization and participation similar to the response given to COVID-19 pandemic.

He assured Nigerians that NYSC would not rest on its oars towards rendering health services and environmental protection and charged Corps members not to relent as they were the drivers of the campaign.

Major General Ibrahim expressed the hope that with regular environmental cleanliness, malaria and other infectious diseases would be a thing of the past in the country.

Some of the corps members took time to clean gutters and other dirty environment in some markets and public places in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
