STUDENTS OF GTC ABAKALIKI CALL FOR IMMEDIATE REMOVAL OF THE PRINCIPAL

EBONYI+STATE+MAPAcademic activities at Government Technical College, GTC, Abakaliki in Ebonyi State was on Wednesday paralyzed as students protested against the inability of the School Management to make the environment conducive for learning. The students who barricaded the school gate with iron seats demanded immediate removal of the school Principal over poor management of the college and inability to provide them with electricity.

It took the efforts of the Police and some government officials before the students accepted to open the gate. Established in 1966, GTC Abakaliki was among the schools recently handed over to Missionaries by Ebonyi State Government.

Investigations reveal that since the handover of the college to the Missionaries, students of the school have been finding it difficult to cope with administrative style of the new managers. The Senior prefect of the College, Master Victor Nwankwoegu and his Assistant, Master Emmanuel Nnaji explained that they embarked on the protest after all appeal for the management to restore light to their dormitory fell on deaf ears.

The School Administrator, Reverend Father James Nwaofoke who was on hand to listen to the demands of the students blamed the situation on alleged withdrawal of the subvention of the school by the State Government.

However, the State Commissioner for Education, Professor John Eke said it was not true that the subvention of the school had been withdrawn and appealed to the students to go back to their classes as all the issues raised would be addressed. Efforts to get the reaction of the Principal of the School was not successful as she was not in her office as at the time of filing this report.
