GOVT TO INVESTIGATE AKAEZEUKWU RIVER ACCIDENT THAT CLAIMED 30 LIVES — UMAHI

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State has called for an investigation into the accident that claimed about thirty lives when a commercial bus carrying mourners plunged into Akaezeukwu River at Afikpo-Okigwe Expressway.

He made the call when he visited the scene of the accident to ascertain how search and rescue operation was being conducted.

Governor Umahi cautioned drivers to be careful while plying the road and commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives in the tragic circumstance.

About fourteen bodies have been recovered from River so far. The Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ebonyi State Command, Mrs. Stella Uchendu, explained that the bodies were recovered by divers who located the ill fated bus in the depth of the river.

Mrs. Uchendu explained that the bodies were seven males and seven females and had been taken to a mortuary in Afikpo North Local Government Area of the state.

Meanwhile the bus had been lifted out of the river by a crane while search for the remaining twelve passengers was still ongoing as at the time of this report.
