ENUGU STATE LAWMAKERS TO SANCTION SOME TRANSITION CHAIRMEN FOR ALLEGED MISUSE OF SECURITY APPARATUS

The Enugu State House of Assembly has threatened to sanction some Transition Local Government Chairmen for alleged misuse of Neighbourhood Watch Groups, Security Vehicles and other Security gadgets.

The Chairman, House Committee on Security Youths and Sports,

Mr. Nelson Uduji issued the threat when he led members of the Committee on an Oversight Visit to the Ministry of Human Capital Development and Poverty Reduction.

The Visit to Ministry was an opportunity for the Committee to look into the activities of the organization with particular interest on the conduct of some members of Neighgbourhood Watch Groups.

The Committee pointed out issues ranging from the operational methodology to discipline.

The Chairman of the Committee, Mr Nelson Uduji while commending the Ministry for its role in carrying out its mandate, however challenged the leadership to  put in place strong mechanism to check excesses of some Neighbourhood Watch members.

Mr Uduji condemned reported cases of alleged misuse of some security equipment by some Transition Local Government Chairmen.

Some members of the Committee including the Chief Whip of the House, Chief Matthias Ekweremadu and Philip Nnamani in their separate remarks called for monitoring of the activities of the groups.

The Commissioner for Homan Capital Development and Poverty Reduction, Deacon Obinna Mbaeke commended members  of the Neighbourhood Watch Groups in the State especially for their selfless services in ensuring the security of lives and property especially in rural areas.

He noted that a lot of them had lost their lives while discharging their duties and called on members of the public to support them.

Deacon Mbaeke said the visit by the Committee would spur them to do more.
