UNICEF & ENUGU GOVT RESTATE COMMITMENT TO ACCESSIBILITY OF SAFE WATER ON YHE OCCASION OF WORLD WATER DAY

Governments and Corporate organisations have been  urged to go the extra mile in ensuring that safe water are supplied to households, schools, workplaces and farms.

The Chief of UNICEF , Enugu Field Office, Doctor  Ibrahim Conteh gave the advice during a media briefing on World Water Day, being celebrated by the global community today.

Doctor Conteh explained that accessibility to clean water, especially by the vulnerable persons in the society which include children, women, refugees and physically challenged persons was essential to their survival.

Speaking on the essence of the day, the Enugu State Commissioner for Water Resources, Mr. Charles Egumgbe explained that the State Government had revamped the water schemes in the State and also embarked on new ones to ensure that the people had safe water in their homes, schools, farms and offices.

Mr. Egumgbe stated that the new Enugu State Water law and  other water policies would among other things facilitate  digital  metering of homes and offices instead of the estimated                  water billing.

In his submission, the Managing Director, Enugu State Water Corporation, Mr. Chidozie Eze said that the corporation always ensured that water pipes were in good condition.

Mr. Eze said that the collaboration between the State and its foreign development partners on water production, purification and distribution was being sustained and strengthened.

A Medical expert, Dr Ijeoma Charles stated that apart from domestic uses of water, water helps medically especially in digestion and washing away of waste from the body system.

Two other respondents also spoke on the importance of water

called on government to see access to water as a human right and not a privilege.

World Water Day observed March twenty-second every year is about focusing attention on the importance of water.

The day mapped out by the United Nations General Assembly also aims at advocating for sustainable management of fresh water resources and tackling water crisis to ensure that people have access to safe water.

The theme of this year’s World Water Day is “Leaving No One Behind” and is aimed at ensuring that everyone had access to safe water, which is the central pledge of the 2030 agenda for sustainable development goals.
