SHUN NEPOTISM, ETHNICITY FOR NIGERIA TO MOVE FORWARD— UMAHI

REPORTER: AMECHI ODO

Governor David Umahi of Ebonyi State says for the nation to move forward, every element of nepotism, tribalism and ethnicity must be jettisoned by the citizens.

He stated this in a message to the swearing in of the 2023 Batch A stream II Corps members at Old Macgregor College Afikpo.

Represented by the State Commissioner for Sports, Mr. Charles Akpuenika, the Governor urged the corps members to promote the peace and unity of the country by preventing all forms of corruption.

Chief Umahi commended the Federal Government for sustaining the National Youth Service Scheme as a veritable instrument of national development and a bond for multifarious ethnic nationalities in the country.

“The National Youth Service Corps scheme has attained remarkable milestones in its mandate of national unity, integration and national development, since inception over 49 years ago.

“I may not therefore be wrong if I say that it remains true symbol of unity bringing together young Nigerians from various institutions, cultures and backgrounds and deploying them for service to fatherland,” the Governor remarked.

The state Coordinator of NYSC, Mrs. Bamai Mercy, said 1,029 (one thousand and twenty nine) corps members registered for the exercise and warned them against acts of indiscipline.

She said the service had been segmented into four cardinal programmes: orientation, primary assignment, community development and passing out, emphasising that they were packaged to instill discipline in the corps members.

“So you are encouraged to look inwards and give back to the society in order to qualify for Presidential Honours Award or State Government Honours Award,” she said.

Justice Nicholas Nwode, who represented the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Elvis Ngene, administered oath of allegiance to the corps members.
