PLAGUING EFFECTS OF UNWANTED PREGNANCIES – STAKEHOLDERS REACT

The alarming rate of unwanted pregnancies among young girls of school age has become a source of worry to parents and other members of the public, especially social implementation of the situation. As a result, some stakeholders in the education sector have called for appropriate measures by school authorities, religious and community leaders to arrest the trend.

For instance, it has been observed that teenagers arrange with traffickers and ritualists to buy their children at birth. Children’s homes are also filled with orphans, while the use of children for begging is on the increase.

The use of quacks in abortions have led to several teenage deaths, while many children roam the streets begging for alms to survive. A student, miss Precious Ossai, narrated how a Junior Secondary School (JSS) 3 student got pregnant and wanted to  conceal it. Another student, miss Ruth iliya, narrated that one of her classmates was a victim of unwanted pregnancy.

A teacher, Chinyere Eziuzo encouraged parents to teach their children to imbibe moral values to enable them to abstain from pre-marital sex and unwanted pregnancies.  A Catholic Priest, the Reverend Father Okwuchukwu Okafor, observed that abortion was not an option for Christians as the Holy Book condemned murder in all guise.  He admonished parents whose daughters have fallen into the trap of pre-marital sex and unwanted pregnancy to consider the option of adoption to safeguard the life of the unborn child. Other respondents called on relevant authorities to devise measures of discouraging unwanted pregnancies in the society through policy formulation.
