NMA S/EAST WANTS VIROLOGY CENTRE ABAKALIKI FUNCTIONAL

The South-East caucus of the Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, wants the Federal Government to make the Virology Centre at the Federal Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki Ebonyi State functional.

Leaders of the caucus made the call in Enugu after an emergency meeting on the recent outbreak o f Lassa fever in Abakaliki, which claimed the lives of two doctors and a nurse.

At a news briefing the Chairman of the caucus and Chairman Enugu State Branch, NMA, Dr. Cajetan Onyedum, said that the Virology Centre in Abakaliki, which is the only such centre in the South-East, should be equipped to handle Lassa fever and other viral diseases effectively.

While calling on medical practitioners to adopt standard preventive measures in the treatment of patients, the caucus advocated public enlightenment on Lassa fever scourge and the need for personal hygiene to curb the spread of the disease it the Zone.

The Council commended the Ebonyi State Government for its commitment towards combating Lassa fever menace but condemned the utterances of the State Commissioner for Health on the death of the two doctors and demanded for retraction.

The NMA in the South-East encouraged management of government, private and faith-based health institutions to provide protective kits for health practitioners in their employ to protect them from contracting deadly diseases.
