CUSTOM DESTROYS SUMGGLED POULTRY PRODUCTS IN OWERRI

The Nigeria Customs Service has destroyed a total of 550 cartons of frozen poultry products worth over ₦10,000,000 smuggled into the country by yet to be identified persons.

The product was confiscated on transit few days ago by customs officials on the Aba- Eleme road, connecting Abia and Rivers states.

The frozen poultry products were destroyed inside a deep gully under the supervision of relevant federal government agencies.

Briefing journalists at the destruction site in Owerri Imo State, the new Comptroller Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit Zone “C” Owerri, Mr. Ahmed Azarema said substantial amount of the banned product was concealed in cartons branded with one of the leading noodles manufacturing companies in Nigeria.

Mr. Azarema explained that it took the eagle eye of his men to uncover the actual content of the product which was being conveyed in a truck with the registration number JJT 633 ZH.

On sighting what you see is package of noodles so if you are not thorough or you don’t have the information you cannot get them, so the products were concealed to deceive our operators but luck ran against them, with our vigilance we got them apprehended.

Mr. Azarema cautioned truck owners to be wary of what their vehicles were being used for, noting that investigations were on to apprehend those behind the illegal business.

He appealed to those who engage in smuggling to desist from sabotaging the nation’s economy as the Service would not relent in the clamp down against offenders.
