NHRC: INSECURITY AND NON-PROVISION OF BASIC INFRASTRUCTURE ARE INFRINGEMENT ON HUMAN RIGHTS

The National Human Rights Commission has expressed concern about the increasing cases of rape and defilement of the girl child in Imo state.

The State Coordinator of the Commission, Dr. Valentine Madubuko, made this known at an event to mark this year’s International Human rights day in Owerri.

He said the commission was grappling with matters concerning harmful widowhood practices and denial of inheritance among families in the state.

Dr. Madubuko noted that the Commission was embarking on sensitization to schools, markets and community leadership structures with a view to eliminating human rights abuses.

Dr. Madubuko described insecurity and non-provision of basic infrastructure as infringement on human rights and called on government at all levels to rise to the challenge.

The Commission staged a road show carrying banners bearing inscriptions on the dangers of human rights abuse and need to end violence against women.
