NASUU PROTESTS POOR RENUMERATION IN UNN

The Non-Academic Staff Union of the University of Nigeria (NASUU), Nsukka has staged a two-day peaceful protest to demand full payment of salaries of its members by the management of the institution.

The protesters chanted solidarity songs to press home their demand as they blocked many offices.

Some of the inscriptions in their placards read “Benjamin Ozumba stop treating your staff members as slaves,” “pay us our 2017 promotion arrears and stop paying us percentage salaries,” and “implement earned allowances now.”

Speaking to journalists, the Chairman Joint Action Committee of Trade Unions of the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Comrade Paul Obodoike Erua, alleged that the Vice Chancellor of the University, Professor Benjamin Ozumba, had been maltreating and marginalizing members of the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University since he assumed office.

Comrade Erua stated that the Management and Non-academic Union of the University had never had a meeting with the Union to discuss issues raised.

The Chairman, National Association of Academic Technologies, Comrade Emmanuel Mbaoji, said he was not happy with all alleged anomalies going on in the institution.

Also, the Chairman Academic Staff Union of University, Comrade Christian Amoke, who wondered why the Management of the University of Nigeria Nsukka was yet to comply with the Federal Government’s directives, said other Universities nationwide had paid their staff.

However, in an emergency meeting held between the Management and the Non-Academic Staff Union of the University the university Management promised to source for money to pay the staff members.

Efforts made to interact with the Vic Chancellor UNN, proved abortive as the security on duty said he was not in the office.
