Reporter: AMECHI ODO

Police in Ebonyi State say a young lady whose hands and neck were almost cut off in a machete attack in a farmland at Amaeze Ishiagu Community in Ivo Local Government Area of the state is still alive while her assailants are not Fulani herdsmen as being rumoured.

In a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Mrs. Loveth Oda, explained that the victim narrated that she was attacked by people who spoke in one of the Ebonyi dialects.

She noted that the attackers made away with her bag of fertiliser, which she was taking to her rice farm when she was attacked. Mrs. Oda stated that efforts were being made to arrest the suspected attackers, who fled the scene shortly after committing the crime.

The State Commissioner for Internal Security, Mr. Stanley Okoroemegha, emphasised that the state government had directed the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area and the Coordinator in charge of the Development Centre, where the incident occurred, to ensure that the lady got necessary medical assistance.

In the meantime, the affected lady, whose name was given simply as Chinyere, had been transferred to a hospital in Enugu for proper medical attention.
