COURT GRANTS BAIL TO UKPO CABINET CHIEF ACCUSED OF FRAUD

Reporter: UCHE NDEKE

The Zone 13 of the Nigerian Police, Ukpo, Anambra State has arraigned one of the traditional cabinet members of Ukpo Community, Chief Izuchukwu Nwabueze before a margistrate court sitting in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area for alleged fraud.

Chief Nwabueze was accused of obtaining money fraudulently from unsuspecting members of the public under the guise of being an aid to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the zone for furnishing of his (AIG) unknown residence.

However the magistrate,  M.N Ibeneme after listening to the Prosecution counsel present their seven count charge against the accused, also heard from the Defence counsel, who told the court that the issue involving his client was politically motivated and meant to intimidate him.

While the prosecution counsel told the court to detain the accused on the grounds of the gravity of the offence for which he was being charged, the Defence Counsel argued that his client,  Izuchukwu Nwabueze was a cabinet member in Ukpo and a Bishop nominee in Nnewi Diocese as well as a reputable character that could not jump bail.

After listening to the arguments, the magistrate granted bail to the accused with a surety of one million naira, who must show three years tax clearance and must be resident within the jurisdiction of the court.

He called on the prosecution counsel to provide witnesses in the matter for the next adjourned date.

Reacting to the ruling, the prosecution counsel and Superintendent of Police, Mr. C.I Obi, said he could not do anything as it was decision of the court. The Defence Counsel, Mr. Jack Iyioku, said the magistrate exercised his discretion judiciously on the bail permission.  The matter was adjourned until October 23, 2020 for further hearing.
