The police command in Anambra State has confirmed the killing of three police officers in Isuofia Community, Aguata Local Government Area by unknown gunmen.
The incident, which took place on Wednesday occurred during a stakeholders meeting convened by a former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor and governorship aspirant in the state, Professor Chukwuma Soludo at Isuofia Civic Center.
According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Tochukwu Ikenga, the assailants were resisted by security operatives and in ensuing gun duel, three policemen sustained severe gunshot injuries and were conformed dead in the hospital.
“The Commissioner of Police who visited the scene for an on the spot assessment condemned the act and commiserated with the families of the officers who paid the supreme price.
“The assailants were resisted by security Operatives present at the event and in the ensuing gun duel, three Police Operatives sustained severe gunshots injuries and were later confirmed dead in the hospital, while their corpses have been deposited in the mortuary,” the statement noted.
The statement also notes that the attackers abducted the Commissioner for Public Utilities in the state, Mr. Emeka Ezenwanne, during the incident.
It states that one person has been arrested in connection with the act while security had been reinforced at the country home of the former CBN Governor and the entire community.
“Following the incidence, the attackers abducted one Engr. Emeka Ezenwanne, Commissioner of Public and Utilities. Meanwhile, one (1) person has been arrested in connection with the act.
The Police Operatives led by the Command CP, visited the scene and also visited the Former CBN Governor to reinforce the security in his house and the Community entirely. In his response, he thanked the Commissioner and his team for the quick response,” SO said the statement.
The statement adds that the Commissioner of Police has ordered immediate launch of a tactic investigation to unravel mystery behind the incident with a view to bringing the perpetrators to justice.
