FRCN PROMOTES LITERARY CULTURE IN ENUGU

The Zonal Director Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN), Enugu National Station, Mr. Ike Okere, wants pupils and students to imbibe reading culture to broaden their horizon.

Mr. Okere made the call during the “Open Mic and Book Jam” of Enugu Literary Society at FRCN, Enugu.

He explained that the Literary Society was instituted to re-generate the literary culture in the country. According to Mr. Okere, literary culture involves drama, poetry, prose and other forms of arts.

“Our aim is to get people to start reading again, to start appreciating the arts, literature, music and to translate these things into personal lives; hopefully, this way, we can breed, create or re-create the society that is based on higher values,” he said.

Mr. Okere used the occasion to announce that the Station would hold vacation classes from August 1 to 31 at the FRCN Broadcasting House, Enugu.

Presenting a book entitled “The Gathering of the Tribes,” the author Nze Evans Ufeli observed that writers were the conscience of any nation.

“If there are no writers in the society, society would go into extinction; we must write and put up stories together that would reflect idea and address issues.”

In an interview, 3 members of the society, Precious Ilokasia, Chinenye Okoye and Cyprian Okeke said that they joined the Literary Society to improve on their writing skills.

“I am an engineer but this society has surely broadened my knowledge about art.”

“I’m interested in literature and writing and reading anything concerning literature and arts; I have been growing, I am not at the same level now.”

“I am from St. Patrick’s College Emene and I find it so interesting to improve on my literary works.”

The Enugu Literary Society meets second Saturday of every month.
