END PAY DISPARITY IN SIMILAR JOBS — CONCERNED ANAMBRA RESIDENTS ADVICE

Some concern persons in Anambra State have urged government at all levels to harmonize workers salaries for efficient service delivery.

They made this known while commenting on the 2022 international Equal Pay Day.

According to the respondents, harmonizing salary scales of civil servants would promote work efficacy and reduce corruption in the country.

Speaking on the significance of the day, the Chairman Nigeria Union of Journalists, Anambra State Council, Comrade Emeka Odogwu, harps on the need for salary harmonization among civil servants for the good image of the people and the nation in general.

Also, a media practitioner in Awka, Mrs. Queen Chibundo, points out that disparity of salaries among civil servants breeds low esteem and increases low productivity among workers.

She appeals to the government to address the situation.

A public servant, Mrs. Perpetual Aju, expresses distatisfation with the discrepancy in salary scales of some federal workers, despite the fact that they do same or similar work in their organizations.

For Mr. Sylvester Onuora, maitaining equal pay among workers is the best way of showing appreciation to civil servants as they attend same market with their counterparts in another ministries, agencies and parastatals.

Other respondents agree that by receiving equal pay, the level of bribery and corruption among workers in private and government establishments will be reduced.

The International Equal Pay Day is celebrated on the September 18 every year since it’s recognition in 2019 by the United Nations Assembly and was first observed in 2020.

The reason is to end pay gap discrimination and to fight for equal pay for jobs of equal values.
