DON’T ENGAGE IN DRUNKENNESS AND OTHER IRRESPONSIBLE ACTS AT CHRISTMAS, CATHOLIC PRIEST ADMONISHES

Christians in Nigeria have been advised to use the Christmas festivity to take stock of their lives to know whether they reflect on the very essence of the birth of Jesus Christ.

The people who made the call while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the significance of the celebration in Awka, Anambra State, said the season reminded them of the spiritual transformation brought by Christ at a time when ignorance, superstition and greed prevailed upon the land.

One of them, the Reverend Father Obiora Eboh, said though Christmas had become a festival observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, the season represented the introduction of a new life of spiritual purity and devotion.

The Reverend Father Eboh however expressed regret that the season had been turned to a period for gallivanting.

For Reverend Father Chris Agwaraonye, the real Christmas is when the divine element of Christ begins to express itself in the heart of men and not engagement in drunkenness and other irresponsible acts.

Also contributing, a lecturer, Professor Charles Nwadigwe, noted that the Christmas celebration called for spiritual awakening and renunciation of all desires for worldly wealth.

Other respondents, Messrs. Princewill Iwuafor and Peter Obidinma, say though Christmas is celebrated as the day of the birth of Jesus Christ, yet it also symbolizes a very deeply significant truth of the spiritual life he brought to humanity.

They noted that the advent of Christ through his birth worked the very transformation that brought a new way of life among Christians.

The respondents called for sober reflection among the Christian faithful on the true essence of the birth of Jesus Christ.
