The Anambra State Government have been called upon to consider putting measures in place to harness tourism potentials inherent in Awka North Local Government Area.

A community leader in Urum Community, Comrade Alloycious Tabansi, made the call while speaking on the 2022 World Tourism Day.

According to Comrade Tabansi, there are many tourism attractions in most of the communities in Awka North that needs urgent government attention to revive and harness its economic and tourism gains.

Comrade Tabansi noted that the ten communities in the area also had rich cultural festivals including Egwu Ori , Egwu Arusi and Ofala festivals, which if properly supported by the government, would no doubt attract tourists and in turn increase the revenue profile of the state.

He commended the Professor Chukwuma Soludo led administration for awarding contract for the construction of one of the strategic roads in the area, which according to him, would also help to open up Awka North Local Government Area to more investors.

Comrade Tabansi, who is the President General of Urum Community, said the area had several natural sites and wonder rivers that could be turned into tourist sites by the government.

The President General noted that the people had taken advantage of a directive by the Commissioner for Tourism, Mr. Don Onyenji, that all communities should articulate tourist sites and cultural festivals in their various towns and forward same to the government.

“Most of us have submitted many potential tourism sites in Awka North through ASATU to the ministry. So I am calling on the ministry to utilize this moment of celebration of Tourism Day to remember everything we have submitted.

“All the waterways, the tourism sites, we even advised that some of the places that we have erosion can be turned into tourist sites because anything you do in a place that people can come and see, jubilate and celebrate has become a tourism site,” he said.

Chief Tabansi said the ten communities in Awka North were part of Awka Capital Territory but had been so neglected by successive administrations while expressing the hope that the Governor Soludu led government would change the narratives.

September 27 every year is set aside as World Tourism Day.
