6 DEAD, 17 INJURED IN ANAMBRA AUTO CRASH

Six persons have been confirmed dead after a truck carrying iron rods lost control and rammed into four other vehicles on Agulu lake road, in Aniocha Local Government Area of Anambra State.

An eye witness attributed the accident to brake failure, which caused the driver to lose control of the vehicle.

The incident, which occurred at about 8:30 Monday morning also left seventeen persons seriously injured.

Confirming the incident in a telephone interview with Radio Nigeria, the Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State, Mr. Andrew Kumapayi, blamed the road crash on recklessness on the part of the truck driver.

Mr. Kumapayi said there was the need for the urgent construction of speed breakers and barricade on the road to discourage heavy trucks from plying the road.

The vehicles involved in the incident included, a L300 Mitsubishi Bus, a Toyota sienna mini van, a Toyota camry car and the 911 truck.

In the meantime, the Police Public Relations Officer, Anambra State Command, Mr. Haruna Mohammed, who corroborated the death toll in a press statement said that the “corpses were deposited at the hospital mortuary for postmortem examination.”

The statement also indicated that security operatives ensured that the road was cleared of encumbrances resulting from the accident.

According to the statement “obstructions were cleared to enable free flow of traffic while investigation is ongoing to ascertain identities of the victims and circumstances surrounding the incident please.”

Meanwhile, the Anambra State Government is to construct barricade on the Agulu Lake Road to forestall future occurrence of such accident.

Governor Willie Obiano stated this shortly after visiting the scene of the incident and the injured victims at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Adaziani.

Governor Obiano ordered that those in critical conditions be moved to the state Teaching Hospital, Amaku Awka for proper medical attention.

The Governor, who gave an assurance that the cause of the accident would be investigated, sympathised with the families of the deceased and the injured victims.
