DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS BUILD LASSA FEVER OBSERVATION BAY IN ABAKALIKI

An Observation Bay for suspected Lassa fever patients has been inaugurated at Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA).

The multi million naira edifice was constructed and donated to the Hospital by Doctors without Borders.

Since 2005 when the first outbreak of Lassa fever was recorded in Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, then known as Ebonyi State University Teaching Hospital, about eleven medical personnel have lost their lives to the virus.

Reports indicate that the high number of medical personnel so far affected was due to lack of facilities for proper management of patients with suspected hemorrhagic fever.

Project Coordinator Doctors without Borders in the State, Ms Julian Hills said that the group was concerned with the safety of medical and  health practitioner.

Ms. Hills promised that another Observation Bay at FETHA One branch of the Hospital would soon commence operation for women and children while arrangement for payment of medical bills of Lassa Fever patients was being concluded.

Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike, inaugurated the facility on behalf of Governor Umahi.

Dr. Umezulike commended Doctors without Borders for the Observation Bay, which he said would help to check further contraction of the virus by medical personnel providing care for suspected Lassa Fever patients.

The Chief Medical Director of the Hospital, Dr. Emeka Ogar explained that Doctors without Borders also constructed an incinerator and relaxation centre while arrangement had been concluded for the payment of medical bills of suspected Lassa Fever patients.

The event featured the unveiling of names of medical personnel who lost their lives to Lassa Fever virus, which were engraved on the wall of the Observation Bay.
